After reading my different kinds of car seats blog, you will now know what type of car seat you need. Now you have the task of deciding what brand. There are HUNDREDS of brands and it can get very confusing.

I have put my top choices below for each stage. These are chosen because of top safety (#1), affordability, ease of installation, and quality.

Infant Car Seat

  1. Chicco Keyfit Infant car seat.

This car seat has been tested for safety and has come up high on the charts for ease, safety and comfort.

Pros:

-Safety tested.

-Easily installed with either UAS or seat belt.

-Narrow car seat: one of the most narrow, measuring in at 17 inch width. Nice, especially if you plan on having more than one car seat in the back.

-Harness is easily secured and adjusted.

-Lots of padding for babies head, back and bottom.

Cons:

– Slightly heavier than some car seats. Weighing in at 9.6 pounds. Not a huge difference.

-Canopy is stiff, so you need to use 2 hands to adjust.

Weight and height restrictions: 4-30lbs and 30 inches or less.

This luxury car seat is the car seat made for the UPPAbaby strollers, which are one of the most popular strollers on the market. No wonder it comes in as one of the best car seats.

Pros:

-Harness can be tightened for babies as small as 4 pounds.

-Easily removable seat cover to wash.

-Easy to install into car and into the UPPAbaby strollers.

-Comes in many different colors and fabrics.

-Tightness indicator (I have not seen any other car seats with this and think it is a very handy feature)

-Fire resistant.

Cons:

-On the pricier side.

Weight and height restrictions: 4-35lbs and 32 inches or less.

Dimensions: Width: 14.5 inches, Height (base to top of handlebar): 2 inches.

Harness: 5 point harness.

Safety: Infant insert for smaller babies. Adjustable headrest with side impact protection.

Convertible Car Seats

This car seat has a no fail system for installation. Which is important when you think that most car seats are installed incorrectly. It relies on the seat belt system and “clicks” the seat belt tight.

Pros:

-Ranked high in crash testing.

-Very easy to install.

-Relies on seat belt and clicks tight for best installation.

-Can be rear facing till 40 pounds.

-7 recline positions.

Cons:

-No cup holders.

Technical Specifications

Weight of car seat:30 pounds.

Weight and height restrictions: 40 lb and 27′ rear facing, 65lb and 54′ forward facing.

Dimensions: Width: 20 inches, Height (base to top of handlebar): 31 inches.

Harness: 5 point harness.

This car seat goes from rear facing (4-40 lbs) to forward facing (20-56 lbs) to both high back belt-positioning booster (30-100 lbs) and backless booster seat (40-120 lbs) easily.

Pros:

-Top rated car seat on the market.

-Steel frame.

-6 recline position.

-5 point safety harness.

-Cup holders.

-Approved for air travel.

-Won’t need another car seat or booster seat.

Cons:

-May not fit well in some cars, as it is a bigger car seat.

This seat is great! It will take you from front facing, high back booster and backless booster from children 22 to 120 pounds. This seat has one of the largest weight ranges in the industry. This will take you from approximately toddler to age 10 depending on the size of your child.

Pros

-Long lifespan. Taking you from toddler years till age 10.

-Recline option.

-Exceeds safety standards.

-Built in seat belt lock off.

-Inexpensive.

-Can use Latch in high back booster.

Cons

-Doesn’t have great head support so it may be uncomfortable for your child.

  • Forward facing weight range: 22-65 pounds.
  • Forward facing height range: 27-49″.
  • High back booster weight range: 30-100 pounds.
  • High back booster height range: 38-57″.
  • Backless booster weight range: 40-120 pounds.

This seat goes from a 5 point harness forward facing seat, to a tall back booster, to a backless booster. It’s very comfortable and it is priced well.

Pros:

-Good price point.

-Tiny buckle pockets to hold the belt while your child gets in.

-Cover is easily removed for washing.

-FAA approved for use in aircraft.

Cons:

-Heavy and bulky (pretty hard to find ones that aren’t though)

-No seat belt lock off device (But you can easily lock the seat belt yourself)

  • Age: The child is one year old or older.

Booster Seats

 

These are booster seats that do not have the option of a forward facing car seat with harness. Many of these convert from high back booster to backless booster, but I will show a backless only option at the end.

With this steel frame, impact absorbing base and cushioned sides, your child is very secure in this seat. This also has a clip to ensure the lap belt doesn’t slide during an accident.

Pros:

 

  • Good height range.
  • SecureGuard clip helps prevent submarining.
  • High and deep side wings for head and torso.
  • Well padded and comfortable.
  • LATCH system for holding booster in place.
  • Can be used as a backless booster.
  • In high back mode can be used in seating positions that do not have a
    head restraint or in cases where head restraint needs to be removed to
    allow booster to be flush with vehicle seat.

Cons:

  • Higher price point.
  • Non reclining.

2) Graco Affix Backless Booster

This is a backless booster only but it’s quite affordable and great for safety and quality.

Pros:

-Easy to set up, adjust and move.

-Very light at 5.6 pounds.

-Latch system.

-Cup Holder.

-Machine washable.

Cons:

-Some people had trouble with the straps on the latch system.

Technical Specs

Weight: 40-100 pounds.

Height: 40-57′.

2) Mifold grab and go

This booster seat is meant to take on the go. It folds up extremely small and is very lightweight. It can fit right into your purse!

Pros:

-Folds up extremely small.

-Could be used in a smaller vehicle that doesn’t fit regular booster seats well.

-Has passed all safety testing.

Cons:

-Some people say it takes a few practice runs to figure out how to use it.
